We visited the picturesque village of Port Sunlight on a bright, warm day. Soaking in the peace, architecture and history of this little haven situated on the Wirral in the North West. Taking the train from Southport to Liverpool Central on the Northern Line, changing at Central to the Wirral Line to a train heading for Ellesmere Port stopping at Port Sunlight station on the way, couldn't of been easier.  There are steps to the platforms at Port Sunlight train station. The village can also be accessed by car with free parking outside the Lady Lever Art Gallery.

This is an easy walk of 2 1/2 miles over mainly level pavements and roads. There are a few steps in places on the route. Wear sensible shoes and bring your camera. There's plenty of photo opportunities.

Stop 1 & 2, Lever House

We used a self guided walk I found online at www.discoveringbritain.org This fabulous route takes you past points of interest and can be downloaded in PDF form and printed out. There are many pages, it explains the history of the sights you see, pictures and easy to follow directions which even somebody like myself who cannot map read and has no sense of direction was able to follow. You can also download an audio guide which has all the information of the booklet except the clear directions at the bottom of each page. I used both. I transferred the audio guide to my phone, paused it when needed, and simply followed the directions on the bottom of the sheets. That way I was able to look around instead of having my head buried in papers whilst walking.

Stop 3, Gladstone Theatre

It took us a long time to walk round, but we kept stopping to look at the sights and took lots of photo's. It's not a walk to rush through and try and maintain a good pace. There's just too much to see.

Take the time to take this tour and visit this fascinating village. The museum and art gallery staff are particularly helpful and friendly. Visit The Bridge Inn pub for a drink, formerly a temperance bar till the village voted on whether it should serve alcohol or not. Wander round the garden centre. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Hillsborough Memorial Garden full of red and white flowers. There are plenty of open spaces and benches, so if the weather is nice, take a packed lunch and eat your sandwiches admiring the 900 listed buildings surrounding you.
